Many modern antimalware applications have an abundance of features that make them overly complicated and resource-demanding. If you're looking for something simpler that's capable of protecting your PC from viruses, Trojans, ransomware and other types of malware, you can try EG Anti Virus.
In addition to multiple scan modes, this tool has a quarantine, some data security utilities, encrypted notes, and a junk files cleaner. It's incredibly easy to use and, although it runs just fine with the default configuration, it puts several customizable preferences at your disposal.
Once the installation is over, it's necessary to enter a password at the first launch, which can be further used to access some parts of the UI: data security tools, system tools blocker, and encrypted notes.
Besides a real-time engine that makes sure your PC is safe from malware attempting to infiltrate into your system, EG Anti Virus has three typical scan modes: quick (for popular malware hiding spots), full (for the entire hard disk, takes longer), and custom (for any selected files or folders).
Once an infection is detected, the application shows its full path in the main window, giving you full control next. By default, the real-time guard moves files to the quarantine folder as soon as malware is spotted.
We're not sure whether or not it should draw the user's attention when this happens (through a notification window), but this didn't happen in our tests. In fact, no alert message was displayed even after instructing EG Anti Virus to only report the threat instead of moving the files to the quarantine.
Alternatively, it can permanently remove the infected files from the PC while skipping the quarantine. The quarantine folder can be accessed from the top-right corner of the window, where you can check out details and restore or delete files.
As far as additional antivirus configuration settings are concerned, you can prevent the app from unloading infected programs from the PC memory, control the file size limit and archive options for scans, as well as temporarily disable the real-time guard and autoupdater. Plus, you can set filters in order to scan only files matching specific extensions, or to exclude these file extensions in order to scan everything else. Settings can be restored to default.
The data security section gives you the possibility to lock folders and encrypt files/folders. Meanwhile, the syscom blocker is capable of disabling some Windows built-in components: Command Shell, Task Manager, Group Policy Editor, Registry Editor, Services, and all USB mass storage devices.
Notes can be written down in a basic notepad and saved to files with a encrypted format, which can only be opened with the help of EG Anti Virus. Lastly, the cleaner can be configured to remove temporary files and folders, Internet Explorer cache, cookies and history, Recycle Bin Contents, and others. The master password can be changed anytime.
The interface is not flashy by any means but it surely offers a cleaner alternative to antivirus solutions currently ruling the industry (most of which seem to have copied ideas from each other). The real-time guard was incredibly fast in our tests, almost instantly removing infected files as soon as they reached the hard drive. System resources were barely used during this time.
Taking everything into account, EG Anti Virus proved to be very responsive to malware threats in our tests. It also successfully detected and removed ransomware. It cannot currently compete with bigger av names but it can definitely be appreciated by users looking for something new and less flashy.
