Some issues that are often encountered when dealing with SharePoint records with attachments are related mostly to the number of attached files, their individual or total size, as well as their actual usefulness.

To put some order into this, it is now possible to use File Upload Field Type, a handy SharePoint component that was especially tailored for performing a variety of attachment related operations.

More precisely, this tool is able to limit the quantity of files that can be attached to a list item or record to a single one. It also offers the possibility to configure the type and size of the attachments or permit only the mandatory items to be added.

This component can, nonetheless, allow more than just one attachment per record, but this should only apply in cases where specific items require several types of files.
