HelpSmith is a feature-rich software application that enables users to create help files for other utilities with ease, thanks to the intuitive environment it provides. It mainly targets software developers.
The installer lets you select components when it comes to the spell checker dictionaries - English (US, UK, Australia, Canada) and German.
Its primary panel is divided into several areas, namely word processing section, topics pane and table of contents.
HelpSmith features standard text editing and formatting tools which are familiar to anyone. They focus on indents and spacing, tab stops, bullets and numbering, and hyperlinks, among others.
You can create and organize the table of contents and its branches in a tree view, build new topics, groups and templates, as well as export and import data (HTML help project or Compiled HTML help file).
Other options of HelpSmith let you use a search and replace function when dealing with large amounts of data, find topics, manage a keywords list, as well as insert pictures and movies from file, media from repository, page breaks, horizontal lines, bookmarks, conditions, HTML code, text variables and breadcrumbs. There are many other features supported by this application.
It runs on a low-to-moderate quantity of CPU and RAM, has a good response time and performs well. The tool did not hang, crash or show error notifications throughout our evaluation. Thanks to its wide array of options and configurable settings, HelpSmith should satisfy all users who are looking to create all-around help files for their tools.
