MidiStuff is a piece of software that enables you to play various music instruments using a MIDI keyboard and record streamed audio data via your computer.
Following a fast and uneventful setup, you come face to face with a rugged and unpolished, yet intuitive GUI. Irrespective of whether you connected a MIDI instrument, you are prompted to browse through and select the audio properties for the program.
You will be happy to learn that you can choose between 16 channels from the main window, channels that are highlighted for the instrument you are using to record your tracks. To be more precise, the active channel is typically marked with light blue, while the rest remain white. You can switch between channels and instruments via a simple double click.
Functionality-wise, the utility is simple and straightforward. You can play audio files via a quick action of opening the track and then hitting the Start button. Then again, it would have been nice if the program supported drag and drop.
Even though you can to open, pause and stop the playback via a combination of hotkeys, it would have been useful if the tool allowed you to customize them. This way you can avoid conflicts with other software solutions that employ similar keys.
The strong point of the utility stems from the fact that you can record sounds as they are processed by your sound card. The application allows you to record your own tracks via two methods, namely from the File menu and via a dedicated button (located in the lower region of the UI).
In the eventuality that you want to let your creativity flow and record your own tracks using your favorite MIDI instrument, then MidiStuff can provide you with the tools and the environment where you can achieve your goal.
