As its name implies, Portable Download Manager is a program that can download files and folders from the online environment.

It contains some interesting features and focuses on speed. The app primarily addresses experienced users.

Since installation is not necessary, you can simply extract the program files to any location on the hard drive and directly run the executable file.

Alternatively, you can save Portable Download Manager to a USB flash drive or similar storage unit, and run it on any computer.

This way, the Windows Registry does not receive new updates, and no files are left behind on the hard drive after program removal. Plus, you can keep Portable Download Manager in your pocket whenever you're on the move.

The interface of the tool is clean and intuitive. The file queue shows the name, status, length, elapsed time, speed, estimated time and URL for each item, among others. Tasks can be created by writing the URL and other properties (e.g. output directory, number of threads), but you may also import incomplete files or a list of URLs from a document.

It is possible to export the download history to file, use a search function, and use a drop box, which stays on top of other frames, in order to quickly create tasks. But you may also download items via FTP and manage websites.

A multitude of configuration settings is available through the Options screen. For instance, you can specify the maximum active downloads, make the tool delete successfully downloaded projects from the list, set proxy details, enable the app to automatically run at system startup, and disable sounds.

Portable Download Manager offers integration for Firefox, Opera, Netscape and Chrome. It has a good response time, downloads a file in reasonable time, and contains a help file. We have not encountered any problems in our tests; the application did not hang, crash or pop up error dialogs. All in all, Portable Download Manager should please all power users who are looking for an alternative download manager.
