3gpMobile is an application with a pretty self-explanatory name - it allows you to convert videos (AVI, ASF, MOV, MP4, MPG, MPEG, WMV) to the 3GP format, supported by mobile phones. But it can also encode items to 3G2.

The interface of the program is based on a standard window where you can import videos by using the file browser because the "drag and drop" functionality is unsupported. Unfortunately, you cannot process items in batch mode.

Once a video has been loaded, you can check out its audio and video properties (e.g. length, frames per second, size, channels). If you are satisfied with the standard settings, then you can specify the output destination and file type, in order to start the encoding task.

On the other hand, you can modify the audio and video options when it comes to the quality, bit rate, frames per second and resolution. It is not possible to create output profiles or to reset settings to their initial values.

Moreover, you can preview clips in a built-in media player and split them by size or by marking the start and end position, as well as change the background color. Once the encoding procedure is done, 3gpMobile offers to open the output file.

The video conversion app requires a high amount of system resources to finish a task in reasonable time. We have not come across any error dialogs during our tests and 3gpMobile did not freeze or crash. The tool has a good response time.

Nevertheless, 3gpMobile delivers a good image and sound quality.  It cannot be set to automatically turn off the computer and you cannot capture frames. The fact that batch processing is unsupported is the biggest downside of the software. Its interface needs some major improvements as well but we must take into account the fact that 3gpMobile has not received updates for a long time.
