As the name of this program implies, MKV Converter allows you to encode media files of various formats (including AVI, FLV, MOV and MP4) to the MKV extension.

The interface of the application is plain and simple to navigate through. Media files can be imported by using the file browser only, since the "drag and drop" method is not supported (and neither is batch processing).

After you specify the output destination and filename, you can proceed with the encoding process. Additionally, you preview the video and trim it by marking the start and end time.

But you can also go to the "Options" area to configure audio and video parameters when it comes to the resolution, frame rate, resize mode and compressor. Settings can be restored to their default values.

The video encoding software runs on a moderate amount of system resources, includes a comprehensive step-by-step guide with snapshots for beginners, quickly finishes a task and manages to keep a good image and sound quality. We haven't come across any difficulties during our tests, since MKV Converter did not freeze or crash.

However, the fact that batch processing is not supported is a huge disappointment. Also, the interface needs a makeover because it's outdated. Otherwise, we recommend MKV Converter to all users.
