Top DVD Ripper is a simple-to-use program that lets you prepare DVDs for multiple devices, such as iPhone, iPod, PS3 and Zune. But you can also copy a DVD to the hard drive.
The interface of the software is plain and easy to work with. You can import a DVD by selecting its source drive from the drop-down list. Unfortunately, you cannot convert multiple DVDs at the same time.
If you prefer the default settings concerning DVD information, then you can set the output file name and destination, in order to proceed with the encoding task.
But these details can be altered when it comes to the title, audio track, subtitle language and movie angle. Plus, you can split the DVD by size or chapters, as well as set Top DVD Ripper to automatically turn off the computer once the task is done.
Moreover, you can copy the DVD to the hard disk by selecting the copy method (entire DVD disc, only the main movie, split a DVD-9 disc into two DVD-5 discs).
In the "Options" menu you can change the interface skin and set the thread priority, as well as configure program settings when it comes to DVD protection removal (e.g. region code) and general properties (e.g. skip and ignore DVD read errors when ripping). These values can be restored to default.
The DVD processing program quickly finishes a DVD conversion task while using a moderate amount of system resources. It has a good response time, includes a help file and delivers a good image and sound quality. No errors have occurred during our tests and Top DVD Ripper did not freeze or crash.
On the downside, you cannot configure audio and video settings for the output videos (e.g. resolution, bit rate, sample rate), as well as preview DVDs or output clips in a built-in media player. There have not been any recent updates.
